This Month's Trivia

Others say that it was an attempt by the Christian Church to 'Christianize' the celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival held on February the 15th. The church officials changed the name to St. Valentine's Day. Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to the Roman God of agriculture, Faunus, and also the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. Near the end of the day, the young ladies would all put their name in a big urn. The bachelors would then pick a name out of it & they would then be coupled for a year, beginning in March. Supposedly many marriages came from this. On St. Valentine's Day the priest placed the names of Saints into the urn. The young people then drew a name from it & during the following year, they were supposed to imitate the life of the Saint they had plucked from the barrel. Around 500AD, Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day. The pairing system for couples was later deemed un-christian & made illegal. Also in England, children went around singing of St. Valentine and collecting gifts. They would also place Valentines on their friends' doorsteps.
