Washing

Laundry Detergent 1
4.5 litres Hot Water, 1/2 cup Soap Flakes, 1/4 cup Washing Soda.
Place soap flakes in a saucepan & cover with water. Heat slowly until soap has dissolved.
Combine the hot water & soap, then stir in the washing soda.
It will thicken as it cools.
Use 1 - 2 cups per load of washing.

Laundry Detergent 2
1.8 litres Water, 3/4 cup Soap Flakes, 1/2 cup Borax, 1/2 Washing Soda
600mls Hot Water & 3.5 litres Cold Water
Place the soap & 1.8 litres of water into saucepan & heat on low until the soap flakes have dissolved.
Stir in the borax & the washing soda until the mixture thickens, then remove from the heat.
Pour the 600mls hot water into a large bucket & then add the soap mixture. Stir well & then
pour in the cold water. Allow to thicken for 24 hours.
Use 1/2 - 1 cup per load.

Laundry Powder
Combine 2 cups of soap flakes with 1 cup each of borax & washing soda.

Fabric Softener
4 cups Water, 2 cups each of white vinegar & baking soda.
Use 1/4 cup in the final rinse stage of your wash.
You may like to add some essential oil for some fragrance.
OR
1/2 cup White Vinegar
OR
1/4 Baking Soda

Washing Freshener
Pour 1/4 - 1/2 cup baking soda into the wash as a detergent booster & for fresh laundry.

Stain Removal

Stain Remover 1
Mix 1 cup of borax with 1 litre of water. Soak the stain in the mixture before washing.

Stain Remover 2
Mix 1 litre of water with 1/2 cup vinegar, 1/2 cup ammonia & 1/4 liquid
washing detergent. Pour into a spray bottle & shake well.

Blood Stains
Rinse thoroughly under cold water. Then apply a paste in water & cornflour or talcum powder.
Let dry & then brush off. Wash as usual.

Coffee or Tea
Use equal parts of water & vinegar.
OR
Rub the stain with beaten egg yolk.

Grass
Rub with vinegar or alcohol. Test the fabric first.

Ink
1 tbs each of water, lemon juice & cream of tartar.
OR
Nail polish remover.
OR
Rubbing alcohol

Grease & Oil
Pour cornflour, chalk or talcum powder onto the stain & let absorb overnight. Then wash as normal.

Perspiration
Using a cottonwool ball, dab with vinegar or lemon juice.
OR
Soak in a solution of 2 cups warm water & 4 tbs salt.

Resin
Using a cottonwool ball, dab with turpentine or alcohol.

Rust
Make a paste of salt & vinegar, then rub into the stain. Leave for 30 minutes & then wash as usual.

General Stain Removing Solutions

Baking Soda
Non toxic all purpose cleaner. Deodorises, removes stains & is a fabric softener.

Borax
A natural mineral that is great for killing bacteria & mould. Deodorises, removes stains &
is good to add to the wash to improve the cleaning power of soap.

Lemon Juice
Stain remover. Cuts through grease. Alternative to bleach.

Salt
For use as an abrasive cleaner. Disinfectant. Stain remover

Vinegar
Water softener. Cuts through grease. General stain remover.

Washing Soda
Water softener, cleans, disinfects & cuts through grease. Boosts the cleaning power of soaps.
General cleaner
Mix baking soda with a little water to form a paste.

Floor Cleaner
Add vinegar & washing soda in a bucket of hot soapy water.

Pet Marks on Carpet
Use a mix of 1/2 vinegar & 2 cups warm water.

Wallpaper Cleaner
Roll up a piece of bread and rub over marks on wallpaper.

Tar Remover
Wet a cloth with linseed oil (food grade) & rub the area firmly.

Vinyl Cleaner
Dissolve 1/4 cup washing soda in 1 cup hot water.

Ink Stains
Use a non aerosol hairspray on the area.
