Study Tips
First things first...turn the TV off! You may find some soothing music helps such as rainforest sounds etc. You will soon know if this is hindering your concentration & is not appropriate for when you are studying.
Also, make sure that you have everything you need to complete the work. Look over what needs to be done to make sure that if you require any special study materials, these are ready at hand. It is a good idea to have a "homework box". Make sure it is filled with things such as pens, pencils, dictionary, scissors, glue etc. Then when it's homework time, all you have to do is pull the box out & you have what you need in one spot ready & waiting.
Make sure that other people in the house know that it's study time & not to make any unnecessary distractions.
Don't study when your hungry or have just finished a huge meal & are full. Have a lite, healthy snack if you are feeling a bit peckish.
Be sure that you are working in a well lit area.
Set a timetable for your study. This will allow you to learn some time management skills. Any big projects can perhaps be done on a Saturday morning with the whole family. Visit places that relate to the project on the Saturday & complete the project on the Sunday, for example. This makes it a little more fun & is a great opportunity for the whole family to get out & learn something.
Sometimes you may get frustrated with some of the work you're doing. This is a great time to have a short break. Put on some shoes & go for a walk. This gives you time to clear your mind & calm down before tackling the task again.
Reward good behaviour & hard work to reinforce the positive effort you have put in. Sounds like a good excuse to have pizza for dinner!
Visit places that relate to the study topic. It can be easier to learn about a subject when you can see it in action & being put to use. Invite your friends to come join you & have a great day out.
Make up your own Trivial Pursuit cards. Make the questions relate to the subject you are studying. Invite your friends over to help you write the questions & answers. Then sit down & enjoy a 'game' with your friends. It's a great opportunity to spend time with each other while learning at the same time. This is very handy around exam time.
Hire the video! I think just about everything has been turned into a movie or had a documentary made about it. Some people remember things a lot easier if they can 'see' it. Why do you think most kids know about the story of the Titanic?
