Breastfeeding/
Formula feeding

Weaning
There is alot of conflict on when is the best time to wean your baby off the breast
or bottle. The time will depend on your baby. Some babies wean themselves off
around 5 - 6mths of age, while others are quite happy to keep feeding until a few
years old. The process of weaning starts with the introduction of solids, even though
breast milk or formula still makes up about 75% or your baby's diet. As long as you &
baby are comfortable with when you choose to wean them off. It isn't advise to
wean abruptly. Your baby has become used to being fed a certain way & the
free cuddle that comes with every feed. It can also effect your breasts if
feeding is suddenly stopped. You have been producing milk to meet your baby's
needs, so it gradually has been changing to suit your baby's habits, so when
you stop all of a sudden, your breasts are still producing in anticipation for the
next feed. A suggested rule to follow is to substitute one feed a day,
atleast every 3 - 4 days. Also make sure that you don't start
the weaning process at a stressful time, as this will only add to it. It is a
great idea to discuss weaning your baby with your Child Health Nurse
or doctor before starting.
